Sustainability Summit at Passo delle Erbe

Sustainability Summit at Passo delle Erbe

Ideas and solutions for Sustainable Tourism in the Dolomites

The "Sustainability Summit" held at Passo delle Erbe highlighted the importance of tourism that respects and sustains the local environment. Through discussions and idea-sharing among young professionals and industry experts, this event—organized in collaboration with Destinaction and the Tourism Cooperative of San Vigilio di Marebbe—found its perfect setting at Ütia de Börz, a refuge embodying the authenticity and sustainable spirit of South Tyrol.

Set amidst the towering peaks of the Dolomites at over 2,000 meters, participants had the chance to explore the challenges and potential of sustainable tourism through three key discussion areas. The topic of food waste management, for example, brought forth practical solutions for reducing food waste and integrating circular economy models within tourism contexts. Professionals engaged in lively exchanges on how to minimize the ecological and cultural impact of their activities while ensuring high-quality visitor experiences that create lasting value for local communities.

A central focus of the event was sustainable tourism experiences. Participants discussed techniques and strategies to promote a form of tourism that respects natural cycles and local populations, valuing natural and cultural heritage. Here, the aim was not just to encourage exploration, but also to cultivate mutual enrichment between visitors and host communities.

Another crucial theme, the socioeconomic impact of sustainable tourism, highlighted the tangible benefits well-managed tourism can offer rural and mountainous areas. Discussions underscored the importance of creating economic opportunities that support local communities while preserving the area’s integrity. This vision, shared by young professionals at the event, seeks to make tourism a driver of social cohesion and well-being for all involved.

Beyond panels and discussions, the event offered moments of genuine connection with nature through guided excursions in the Puez-Odle Natural Park, wildlife watching sessions, and stargazing. These experiences enabled participants to fully appreciate the region and understand the importance of protecting it—not just as a workplace but as a shared resource.

The summit concluded with a guided workshop, where participants had the opportunity to transform the ideas shared into concrete projects for a more sustainable future in tourism.

The "Sustainability Summit" at Passo delle Erbe was not only an educational gathering but a true laboratory of ideas. It inspired a new generation of professionals with the motivation and insight to make tourism of the future more sustainable and inclusive.
